Accessing your account's network storage space

Every CSBS account includes network file storage space. This network storage is backed up nightly, and those backups are retained for six months. If you ever need a file that you've saved to your network storage recovered from tape, submit a request to the helpdesk.

There are several ways to access your network storage. When you are off campus you can upload and dowload to and from your network storage using SFTP. If you are on campus, connected to the CSBS network, you can map your storage to a virtual drive on a PC or MAC.

PC (Windows XP)

If you use a Windows PC that has been set up by CSBS Computing, your N: drive is automatically mapped to your network storage. This means that you can open and save files directly to your network storage as if you were using a hard drive inside your computer.

Here are the steps to map a drive to your network storage. Follow these if your N: drive is not automatically mapped.

  • Either from your Desktop, or your Windows start menu, double-click the "My Computer" icon.
  • From the menu bar at the top of the window, click "Tools" and select "Map Network Drive."
  • Choose any available letter for the "Drive". We recommend you select "N:"
  • Type "\\csbsshare\home" in the "Folder" text box.
  • Click the blue underlined link titled "different user name."
  • Type your username preceded by "csbs\" (ie. "csbs\ab1234") in the "User Name" text box.
  • Type your password in the "Password" text box.
  • Click "OK"
  • Click "Finish"

Your network storage should now be available to you as whatever drive letter you choose.

Macintosh (OS X)

Here are the steps to connect your Macintosh to your network storage.

  • From the "Go" menu, select "Connect to server".
  • In the "Address" text box, type "afp:/at/csbsmacshare:CSBS/home" (without quotes, case sensitive)
  • Click "Connect"
  • At the user name and password prompt, type your csbs username and password. This should be the same username and password that you use to access your department email.
  • Click "OK"
  • On your desktop, you should now see an icon that looks like a hard drive and is labeled "home."

You can now open and save files directly to your network storage by choosing the "home" drive when you prompted to open or save a file.
