Using Pine via SSH for email access

Program for Internet News & Email, or Pine, is a terminal based email client developed by the University of Washington. These instructions cover basic viewing, writing, and printing only. UW has full instructions avaliable at http://www.washington.edu/pine/tutorial.4/index.html

Accessing Pine

  • To access Pine, connect via SSH, type pine and press Enter.
    For instructions on connecting via SSH, click here.
  • The first time you run pine, you will be presented with greeting text. Press "e" on your keyboard to skip the greeting.

  • You should now see the main menu.

Viewing Email

  • Press "I" on your keyboard to view the message list of the current mailbox. When you first log in, your INBOX is the current mailbox.

  • To select a message for viewing, use the "P" key for previous and "N" key for next to move up and down the list of messages.
  • Press your Enter key to open the message.

  • Press the "I" key to switch back to the INBOX list or press "R" for reply, "F" for forward, or "D" for delete. Note that when a message is marked for deletion, from the message list ("I") press "E" to expunge the deleted messages. Once a message hs been expunged, it cannot be recovered. Pine does not use a Trash mailbox.
  • To quit using pine, press "q" and then "y" to confirm quiting.

Sending Email

  • From the message list, or "I" screen, or from the main menu, press "C". This should open a compose mail window.
  • Type the recipient's email address and press Enter.
  • Press Enter two more times to access the subject line. Type your subject
  • Press Enter one more time to access the message body area. Type your email message

  • To send the message, press and hold down the "Ctrl" key and press "X". Press "Y" to confirm your send command. You should see "Message send and copied to "sent-mail" at the bottom of your screen.

Printing Email

Note: You can only print to printers within your department

  • From the main menu (to return to the main menu, press "M") Press "S" for setup.
  • Press "P" for printer.
  • Press "N" repeatedly until you highlight "Personally selected print command".

  • Press "A" for Add Printer. Type the name of the printer (ie. "osh_pr275") and press Enter. Usually the name can be obtained either checking the label on the printer, or by contacting the helpdesk.
  • You should now be prompted for a command. Use "lp -d PRINTER" where PRITNER is the name of the printer you entered in the previous step (ie. "lp -d osh_pr275"). Press Enter once you've typed the command.

  • Press "S" to select the printer you just added to be your default printer in Pine.
  • Press "E" to exit setup and answer "Y" to commit the changes.
  • Open the email that you wish to print using the instructions above under "Viewing Email".
  • Press "%" on your keyboard. This should present your printer request as "printername-request" (ie. osh_pr275-112)
  • Press "E" to return to your message
